Former NSNC Scholarship Winner becomes National News Anchor

Rob Nelson

National Society of Newspaper Columnists Education Foundation Secretary, Dave Lieber, reports that the very first winner of our Student Scholarship Contest has just become a national media news anchor.

An article on the Nola.com website this morning reported that Rob Nelson, formerly a reporter at the New Orleans Times-Picayune for 7 years, has accepted a job as news anchor at “World News Now,” ABC’s overnight newscast.

According to the article, Nelson got his first really big break in media news 3 years ago when he went from the Times-Picayune to WWLTV – Channel 4 news in New Orleans as a news anchor in what was considered as an unconventional hire.  Nelson will move from New Orleans to New York City for the new job.

Nelson received his scholarship award at the 1999 NSNC Conference in Louisville.  Past NSNC President, Bill Tammeus said, “I remember Rob as a really smart and nice kid.”  When accepting the scholarship award, Rob Nelson said, “I think column writing is noble and admirable work, and I hope to follow in your footsteps.”

Rob Nelson, at 31 years of age, has exceeded our greatest expectations and we at NSNC congratulate him with immense pride in his professional accomplishments.
