Georgia Columnist takes Double Awards

While our illustrious group does not include sports columnists on a regular basis, I thought I’d share some news seeing as how I alternate between a sports column and humor column.

I attended the Georgia Sports Writers Association’s Annual Meeting this past Sunday in Marietta, Georgia. The event featured a number of speakers and the annual awards presentations. Awards were presented for sports writing in a number of categories, including best sports column.

A column I wrote talking about the passing of a local businessman and former coach took first place in Division III (which included all weekly newspapers). Not only did that piece take first place in the sports column category, it was selected as the Furman Bisher (a legendary sports columnist in Georgia) Sweepstakes Award winner (the best story in Division III) which also included a check for $150. I take a little pride in the fact the column not only bested all of the Division III sports column entries but also topped every sports piece entered in that division as well.
