SUMMARY:Getting the Full Story in the Age of Media Mistrust with Julian Rubinstein and Terrance Roberts
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, June 3\, 2021\n7:30 PM Eastern Time/ 5:30 PM Mountain Time\nFREE! Register HERE\nStories cannot be written from press releases and political soundbites alone. Julian Rubinstein’s new book The Holly: Five Bullets\, One Gun\, and the Struggle to Save an American Neighborhood details the intricacies and contradictions that exist between law enforcement and Black America through the lens of Northeast Denver. He also manages to shine a light on the cost of gutting local newsrooms. \nWhile researching this book\, Rubinstein attended the same community meetings as local law enforcement and media and was surprised when local media failed to report on significant happenings. \nJoin NSNC Media Director Bonnie Jean Feldkamp as she talks about media coverage\, how it affected Terrance Roberts’ efforts to prevent gang violence along with Julian Rubinstein’s observations of how a gutted local media fell short in coverage on important issues for Denver’s northeast neighborhoods. \nFREE! Register HERE\nAbout The Holly: Five Bullets\, One Gun\, and the Struggle to Save an American Neighborhood\n \n\n \nAn award-winning journalist’s dramatic account of a shooting that shook a community to its core\, with important implications for the future \nOn the last evening of summer in 2013\, five shots rang out in a part of northeast Denver known as the Holly. Long a destination for African American families fleeing the Jim Crow South\, the area had become an “invisible city” within a historically white metropolis. While shootings there weren’t uncommon\, the identity of the shooter that night came as a shock. Terrance Roberts was a revered anti-gang activist. His attempts to bring peace to his community had won the accolades of both his neighbors and the state’s most important power brokers. Why had he just fired a gun? \nIn The Holly\, the award-winning Denver-based journalist Julian Rubinstein reconstructs the events that left a local gang member paralyzed and Roberts facing the possibility of life in prison. Much more than a crime story\, The Holly is a multigenerational saga of race and politics that runs from the civil rights movement to Black Lives Matter. With a cast that includes billionaires\, elected officials\, cops\, developers\, and street kids\, the book explores the porous boundaries between a city’s elites and its most disadvantaged citizens. It also probes the fraught relationships between police\, confidential informants\, activists\, gang members\, and ex-gang members as they struggle to put their pasts behind them. In The Holly\, we see how well-intentioned efforts to curb violence and improve neighborhoods can go badly awry\, and we track the interactions of law enforcement with gang members who conceive of themselves as defenders of a neighborhood. When Roberts goes on trial\, the city’s fault lines are fully exposed. In a time of national reckoning over race\, policing\, and the uses and abuses of power\, Rubinstein offers a dramatic and humane illumination of what’s at stake. \nBy the Book HERE

SUMMARY:The Art of the Interview

As journalists\, we’re used to conducting interviews for crafting articles that quote and otherwise glean from conversations. In Zoom webinars and other live programs\, an interview looks very different. There’s no going back later to cobble quotes together for an article. It all happens in real time. The interviewer must lead the conversation for an immediate audience.  \nMary C. Curtis\, a columnist at Roll Call\, an award-winning journalist\, and host of the CQ Roll Call podcast “Equal Time\, with Mary C. Curtis;” and John Avlon\, who has gone from Editor-in-Chief of The Daily Beast to senior political analyst and fill-in anchor at CNN\, will provide valuable insights to the art of the interview. \nStudents email Bonnie Jean Feldkamp at Media@Columnists.com for your FREE registration. \n$25 for Members. SUMMARY:NSNC Hosts First Amendment Forum
DESCRIPTION:Despite an abundance of media outlets and formats\, our nation’s freedom of speech is imperiled. The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees that the government may enact no laws regarding the establishment of religion\, and bestows the rights of free speech\, freedom of the press\, and the right of peaceable assembly. Yet\, the public is increasingly skeptical of information received through news sources\, wary of its privacy being protected\, and anxious that its rights of free expression and peaceable assembly are being impeded. \nWhat are the underlying concerns about this fundamental right that’s causing our societal unease\, and what can be done to ensure the most essential of American rights is protected? To discuss this vital issue\, the NSNC has assembled four expert panelists for a virtual First Amendment Forum on Monday\, October 26\, at 8 p.m. They include: \n \n\nRobyn Blumner\, the President and CEO of the Center for Inquiry\, which stands for the separation of church and state.\nLori Duff\, an Atlanta-area municipal-court judge\, columnist\, and author of several books.\nMichael Leonard\, who’s been an adjunct professor at Indiana University since 1987 and a longtime journalist.\nTom Melia\, director of the Washington\, DC\, office of PEN America\, which works to facilitate the unfettered creation of art and exchange of ideas.\n\nEach panelist will speak for approximately 10 minutes on their area of expertise\, and then the session will be open to Q and A for all participants. The cost is $25. Whether you’re a journalist\, an academic\, or simply a concerned citizen\, we hope you’ll join us for this opportunity to discuss and outline how we can protect and enhance the vitality of our Constitutional protections. \nRegister Now
