SUMMARY:The Art of the Interview
DESCRIPTION:In the pandemic\, journalists are doing a lot of “Zooming” and are expected to do more live interviews. As journalists\, we’re used to conducting interviews for crafting articles that quote and otherwise glean from conversations. In Zoom webinars and other live programs\, an interview looks very different. There’s no going back later to cobble quotes together for an article. It all happens in real time. The interviewer must lead the conversation for an immediate audience.  \nMary C. Curtis\, a columnist at Roll Call\, an award-winning journalist\, and host of the CQ Roll Call podcast “Equal Time\, with Mary C. Curtis;” and John Avlon\, who has gone from Editor-in-Chief of The Daily Beast to senior political analyst and fill-in anchor at CNN\, will provide valuable insights to the art of the interview. \nStudents email Bonnie Jean Feldkamp at Media@Columnists.com for your FREE registration. \n$25 for Members. Register Here – Login to access your discount. \n$45 for Nonmembers. Register Here. \nNot a Member? Join Now! \n

SUMMARY:NSNC Hosts First Amendment Forum
DESCRIPTION:Despite an abundance of media outlets and formats\, our nation’s freedom of speech is imperiled. The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees that the government may enact no laws regarding the establishment of religion\, and bestows the rights of free speech\, freedom of the press\, and the right of peaceable assembly. Yet\, the public is increasingly skeptical of information received through news sources\, wary of its privacy being protected\, and anxious that its rights of free expression and peaceable assembly are being impeded. \nWhat are the underlying concerns about this fundamental right that’s causing our societal unease\, and what can be done to ensure the most essential of American rights is protected? To discuss this vital issue\, the NSNC has assembled four expert panelists for a virtual First Amendment Forum on Monday\, October 26\, at 8 p.m. They include: \n \n\nRobyn Blumner\, the President and CEO of the Center for Inquiry\, which stands for the separation of church and state.\nLori Duff\, an Atlanta-area municipal-court judge\, columnist\, and author of several books.\nMichael Leonard\, who’s been an adjunct professor at Indiana University since 1987 and a longtime journalist.\nTom Melia\, director of the Washington\, DC\, office of PEN America\, which works to facilitate the unfettered creation of art and exchange of ideas.\n\nEach panelist will speak for approximately 10 minutes on their area of expertise\, and then the session will be open to Q and A for all participants. The cost is $25. Whether you’re a journalist\, an academic\, or simply a concerned citizen\, we hope you’ll join us for this opportunity to discuss and outline how we can protect and enhance the vitality of our Constitutional protections. \nRegister Now

DESCRIPTION:NSNC is always looking for new ways to help its members connect with fellow scribes. With this in mind\, we’re happy to introduce Press Flix! Using Netflix\, we’re able to create a virtual movie party. Every month\, we’ll screen a different journo-centric movie that reinforces the vital role the Fourth Estate plays within society.  \nWe’ll launch Press Flix on September 12 at 7 p.m. We’ll screen Spotlight\, a 2015 movie starring Michael Keaton\, Mark Ruffalo\, Rachel McAdams\, and Liev Schreiber that tells the story of the Boston Globe’s Spotlight investigative-journalism unit as it unearths the Boston Catholic Archdiocese’s sex-abuse scandal. Spotlight’s work earned the Globe the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service\, but glory was never the goal. Quality journalism catalyzes societal change\, improves lives\, and helps us foster empathy and our common humanity. \nGet ready for PressFlix by reading this recent Q&A with Eileen McNamara  \nWe hope you’ll connect with your NSNC compatriots. There’s no admission charge for the movie\, but donations are greatly appreciated! \nTo register email Media@Columnists.com \nWatch the movie trailer.
