Indiana Governor proclaims Columnists Days

Indiana Gov. Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr. has officially proclaimed “Columnists Days” in Indiana in recognition of the 34th annual conference of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists. 

The proclamation reads:

   WHEREAS, columnists are a vital part of the news media, and they also make significant contributions to their communities and to the journalism profession in general; and

   WHEREAS, the National Society of Newspaper Columnists (NSNC), founded in 1977, is the only professional association in journalism devoted solely to columnists and has members throughout the United States, Canada and other countries; and

   WHEREAS, the NSNC established National Columnists Day, observed each year on April 18, the date Indiana native Ernie Pyle, who symbolized the best among columnists, was killed in World War II; and

   WHEREAS, the NSNC is holding its annual conference July 8-11, 2010,at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, where Ernie Pyle got his formal education; and

   WHEREAS, the NSNC will honor columnist Carl Hiaasen of The Miami Herald at this conference with the presentation of its Ernie Pyle Lifetime Achievement Award;

   NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr., Governor of the State of Indiana, do hereby proclaim July 8-11, 2010 as

                                                         Columnists Days

in the State of Indiana, and invite all citizens to duly note this occasion.
