Lieber’s kids do well at state competition

Texas junior high and high school students who publish The Black Cow student newspaper  recently earned 56 awards in the annual statewide journalism competition. NSNC Education Foundation Secretary, Dave Lieber, Ft. Worth Star-Telegram, is the student newspaper’s advisor and is justifiably proud of their accomplishments.

Fewer entries were allowed in each category this year muting the student’s hopes of winning. However, they not only won, but  managed to set a new record. The Black Cow is a monthly publication and participation is an extra-circular activity, not a journalism class.

One elated student  hopes  to pursue journalism as a career. “I’m looking into it,” said Rameen Sarwarzad, 14 year old  reporter and editor.

Another student is torn between journalism and a medical career, “Writing comes easily to me; science doesn’t,” says 16 year old Sarah Titus.

Students expressed shock and celebration at the new record. “It’s awesome to compete at the state level,” said Riley Rennhack, age 17.
