Heartfelt Sympathy from NSNC

NSNC would like to express its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Robert Lawrence "Larry" Maddry. He passed away on March 29, and he had been in a long-term care facility for the last few years in gradual decline. Maddry was 90 years old, just one week shy of his next birthday. His son, Larry, remembers the excitement he had in organizing the first NSNC Conference in Virginia Beach. Read Larry's obituary in The Virginian-Pilot: https://www.pilotonline.com/obituaries/robert-lawrence-larry-maddry-virginia-beach/

Are You a Jerk?

By Chris Carosa NSNC President I admit it. I’m not enough of a jerk. I’m guessing that explains why I’m not as successful as I could be. Do you feel the same way about yourself and your own career? Here’s what I mean: At a recent journalism conference, I listened to a very dynamic speaker.…

NSNC Criticizes Attacks on the News Media

In the run-up to tomorrow’s election, President Trump has made several attacks on news media and journalism, calling us an enemy of the people and purveyors of falsehoods. The National Society of Newspaper Columnists condemns these statements on journalism as both inaccurate and harmful.  Since 1977, the NSNC has been comprised of writers who are…

Compelled and Propelled by the NSNC

By Curtis Honeycutt NSNC Member Earlier this year I was looking for some column advice when I stumbled into Suzette’s path. I didn’t realize she literally wrote the book on it. Not only that, I wasn’t aware of the existence of the NSNC. Suzette encouraged me to join the Columnist Clubhouse group on Facebook and…

Glorious Past, Prosperous Future

By Chris Carosa NSNC President Close your eyes for a moment and think back to that time when you first decided to become a columnist, to become a writer. Imagine the dreams you had right then. They started without clarity, a fuzzy mist of hope, angst, and maybe, if we were lucky, a touch of…

My Top 10 Columnist Books. Have You Read Them?

You, the Columnist By Dave Lieber Dallas Morning News columnist My kid brother visited recently and gasped when he saw my home office library. Hundreds of journalism books.
