Heartfelt Sympathy from NSNC

NSNC would like to express its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Robert Lawrence "Larry" Maddry. He passed away on March 29, and he had been in a long-term care facility for the last few years in gradual decline. Maddry was 90 years old, just one week shy of his next birthday. His son, Larry, remembers the excitement he had in organizing the first NSNC Conference in Virginia Beach. Read Larry's obituary in The Virginian-Pilot: https://www.pilotonline.com/obituaries/robert-lawrence-larry-maddry-virginia-beach/

Uncle Alex Wants YOU

By Lisa Smith Molinari President National Society of Newspaper Columnists   In the months leading up to the November 8th general election, there has been a lot of finger-pointing going on. But one particular finger has been pointing at us long before our current political candidates were using theirs to place blame. We all know…

Have Questions? Ask Alex.

Do you ever wish you had a mentor to give you advice about the business? Sure, we have the Columnist Clubhouse as a place where anyone can go to gather, share and offer support. Of course, you can always post questions there. But people don’t always see every post and let’s face it, maybe you…

Suit Up For Writing Online: Word Count Matters

by Bonnie Jean Feldkamp NSNC Director of Media There’s a reason Erma Bombeck and Art Buchwald columns were under 500 words and Ernie Pyle kept his to 700. It works. Not only is that what many editors want, it’s also what most people are willing to read. Humor columnists and opinion bloggers, in particular, must…

Old Man to host Alex in 2017

By Lisa Smith Molinari President National Society of Newspaper Columnists There is a steep granite cliff among the towering White Mountains of New Hampshire, where, for many years, the glacier-sculpted profile of “the Old Man of the Mountain” looked out upon the state — guarding its historical significance, uniquely American ideals, fiercely independent residents, and…
